Name: Dr Ciara Close
Role: AIMN Co-Chair | Midwifery Lecturer
Place of Practice: Queens University Belfast
We are honoured to feature Dr Ciara our newly selected Co-chair, whose journey into midwifery and education is deeply rooted in family legacy, global practice, and a commitment to evidence-based learning.
Dr Ciara was inspired by her late Aunt Mary O’Prey, a highly respected midwife who spent a decade working internationally across Saudi Arabia and Oman before transitioning into midwifery education and community practice in Northern Ireland. Mary’s passion, knowledge, and leadership as both a former labour ward sister and midwifery lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast left a lasting impact. Her influence continues to shape Dr Ciara’s work today, keeping midwifery “in the family” and honouring a powerful legacy.
Currently, Dr Ciara is most passionate about ensuring student midwives have a safe learning space an environment where confidence, critical thinking, and advocacy can grow. One defining moment in her journey was putting on her blue midwifery uniform for the first time a moment that marked the beginning of a deeply meaningful career.
Being part of the All-Ireland Midwifery Network helps keep evidence-based practice at the core of her work, reinforcing the importance of research-informed care across education and practice.
On challenging days, Dr Ciara is motivated by knowing the ripple effect of education:
“One student midwife who leaves your class confident is more likely to speak up and advocate for women.”
Her advice to midwives and students alike is simple yet powerful:
“Remember why you started your journey.”
