Name: Siobhán Flynn
Role: CMM2 Parentcraft
Place of Practice: Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise

For this Member Spotlight, we are delighted to feature Siobhán, whose journey into midwifery began with a single, powerful moment.

While training as a nurse, witnessing her first birth left her in awe of the strength of women. That experience ignited a passion that led her to complete her Higher Diploma in Midwifery, followed by a Masters in Midwifery Practice. Along the way, she discovered a deep commitment not only to caring for women but to educating them about their own health and wellbeing.

Siobhán is currently in what she describes as “the role I was born for” teaching perinatal classes throughout pregnancy and the postnatal journey. She is passionate about supporting physiological birth while also preparing women for the many ways birth can unfold. From early pregnancy to six months postpartum, she empowers, educates, and elevates women’s confidence in their own abilities. Whether facilitating group sessions or offering one-to-one support for women with additional learning needs, her focus remains the same: informed, confident, supported women.

One moment that has stayed with her involved a woman who was deeply fearful of birth and initially planned for a caesarean section with minimal hospital contact. Through personalised sessions and participation in a hypnobirthing course, that woman’s confidence grew. She went on to have a spontaneous vaginal birth and described feeling transformed proud of what her body was capable of. For Siobhán, it was a powerful reminder of the impact of education and belief.

As a member of AIMN, she values the constant encouragement towards continuous professional learning. The accessibility of online seminars from Spinning Babies and peanut ball use to evidence-based care in pregnancy loss has strengthened her practice and enhanced the care she provides.

On challenging days, it is simple: the women motivate her. Knowing that women seek professional guidance delivered with knowledge and kindness keeps her grounded and committed.

Her advice to midwives and students? “Find what you love most about midwifery and go for it. There are so many avenues labour ward, homebirth, emergency care, education, research, whatever it is, it is achievable.
